Degrees Offered

The Art Department offers Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees. 

The BFA is an intensive studio program intended for students interested in pursuing either graduate school or professional studio careers.

The BA is a strong liberal arts degree well-suited for students interested in combining the visual arts with other disciplines such as psychology, literature, or business.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Art
A. Art Foundation Requirements, 15 semester hours
 

  1. ART 105 Foundations I:
    Core Concepts, 3 semester hours
  2. ART 107 Foundations II:
    Core Concepts, 3 semester hours
  3. ART 109 Foundations III:
    Drawing Concepts, 3 semester hours
  4. ART 111 Foundations IV:
    Digital Concepts, 3 semester hours
  5. Foundations V: ART 101 Introduction to Ceramics or ART 121 Introduction to Sculpture, 3 semester hours

B. Art History Requirements, 12 semester hours
(Must include one course at the 300/400 level.)

C. Approved Studio Concentration Courses, 21 semester hours.  (Choose one of the following: Ceramics, Drawing, Graphic Design, Metalsmithing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, or Sculpture.) Note: The first course in Ceramics, Drawing or Sculpture that is taken to satisfy Art Foundation Requirements may also be counted toward Approved Studio Concentration Courses.

D. Core Media Studies, 15 semester hours (Choose five more Art introductory courses: Ceramics, Graphic Design, Metalsmithing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture.)

E. Cognate Requirements, 12 semester hours

  1. TSC 101 Fundamentals of Speech Communication, 3 semester hours
  2. Nine semester hours from: History, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Literature, and/or Social Science. (Cannot double count these courses. They must be in addition to Liberal Arts Studies requirements.) 9 semester hours

Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art

This degree will require an additional semester of study beyond the 120 credit hour degree in Art.

All Bachelor of Arts students must participate in a group exhibition.

* Denotes courses that are required to be taken in residence at the Siena Heights University Adrian campus. EDU 480 is a residency requirement and all student teaching placements will be made in Lenawee County.

a. Grade Point Average Requirement:
Students must earn a 3.0 grade point average in their education courses and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 at the time of application for student teaching.
b. The Michigan Teacher Certification Regulations require that students take forty (40) semester hours of general or liberal education. These courses are intended to serve the same purpose as Siena Heights UniversityÕs General Education Program, that is, to ensure that a prospective teacher has some background in each of the traditional academic disciplines.
c. Before being admitted as candidates to the Teacher Education Program, students must:

  1. fill out the appropriate application forms.
  2. pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification Basic Skills test.
  3. have a cumulative GPA (from Siena) of 2.5.
  4. have on file in the Teacher Education Office a current 'life plan.'

Minor in Art History

NOTE: All art history minors must earn a grade of 'C' or better in all art history courses.

NOTE: With the exception of those pursuing the BFA in Art History, students may double count art history courses for both major and minor requirements.

Grade Point Average Requirement:

  1. Students majoring or minoring in Art or Art History must earn a grade of 'C' or better in all art and art history courses.
  2. Any student wishing to continue in sequential art and art history courses must have earned a grade of 'C' in all designated prerequisites.
  3. Students may not double count studio concentration and studio electives.
