We Were Here

Objects from the Studio Angelico Collection | co-curated by senior exhibitions

october 5 - October 31

Mask up. Temp check. Place dot on shirt. Today, yellow. Sanitize.

Enter. Wipe on. Exit. Wipe off.

Wash hands thoroughly. Sing happy birthday to yourself.

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Drive away. Mask off. Roll windows down.

Breath deep.

We are experiencing the world in a way that is unprecedented in our lifetime. Space between our bodies is scrutinized; clear plexiglass bisects our voices; we see ourselves, looking at our peers, looking at themselves, pixelated through our screens. Yet, we are still here.

We Were Here features objects from another moment in Studio Angelico’s history. When a shaft of light illuminating the landscape or a perfectly delineated brush stroke, was transcendental. A moment when proximity was not cause for concern. When our hands were not chafed from washing and sanitizing. When we could embrace our family, friends, and lovers with abandon.

The world from before feels remote and hard to grasp. We know things will change, counterbalancing back towards some semblance of equilibrium. Some things will be broken to be rebuilt. Some systems will never recover.

Perhaps these ghosts can help us to understand how fast time moves. To see that some things needed to fail. That every moment was a now, that turns into a then, so hold tight.

That, we too, were here.
